Platform Overview

Based in Nuremberg and Berlin,[3] Streetspotr offers “retail intelligence,” “shopper insights,” “private workforce,” and “digital merchandising” for large companies who sell products through third-party stores.[4] Through their platform, companies can leverage the “power of the crowd,” to do things like check their product’s placement, presentation, and stock levels at hundreds of stores over very short periods of time.[5]

As described on their website, they offer companies: “500,000+ people armed with their smartphones, ready to report and feed back. Globally.”[6]

Workers are paid for completing “microjobs” that involve things like taking photos of product placement in local stores.

Streetspotr was one of the original three signatories to the Code of Conduct, signing the first version in 2015.[7]

  • Platform History

Streetspotr was founded in 2011 in Germany. Today, they work “from three locations in Europe with partners and networks around the globe.”[8]

In 2016, Streetspotr was awarded new funding and mentoring through marketing firm Publicis Group. At that time, they expanded their reach by 20 countries, to now include 24 countries: “Germany, Austria, Switzerland, UK, Italy, Spain, France, Belgium, Bulgaria Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Greece, Croatia, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Hungary.” They also offer services through a partner in the US.[9]

  • Business Model

According to a 2014 post on förderland, Streetspottr pays two thirds of its fees directly to crowd workers, and retains one third for itself.[10]

  • Worker Classification

    Workers are self-employed.

  • Jobs and Clients

Microjobs typically consist of a set of short questions about a product in a nearby store. For example, a worker might be asked to check yes or no if a product is available, give their own subjective rating of it, and take three photos of it on the shelf.[11]

More examples of Streetspotr projects can be founds on the cases page of their website: https://streetspotr.com/cases/.

Screenshots of the app and sample tasks can also be found in the listing pages for the Streetspottr app on the Apple iTunes Store and Google Play Store.

    Example Clients

Clients advertised on the Streetspotr homepage include[12]:

    • Ferrero
    • Procter & Gamble
    • Nestle
    • Müller
    • Paulaner

    Clients

Streetspotr has a self-service interface for small clients. Jobs posted by clients to the self-service interface are checked by Streetspotr staff before being published. Results are also checked before being returned to clients. Streetspotr will advise clients on designing microjobs and preparing briefings on request.

    Workers

For freelance crowdworkers using the Streetspottr app, money is earned for each “microjob.” Workers sign up for Streetspottr after downloading the mobile app to an iPhone or Android device. Inside the app, workers can see available microjobs on a map, and choose to accept microjobs that they want to do.

Workers have a short time period, e.g. 12 hours, to complete a task after accepting it. Most submitted work is reviewed by Streetspotr employees; some clients however may review the work themselves. Work is generally reviewed within 2 (at absolute most 7) days. After review and approval, workers can request a fund disbursement, and earnings are then transferred to workers via PayPal within 30 business days.[13]

Notably, when Spots are rejected, workers do have an opportunity to re-do them:

If your Spot got rejected, you can correct it within a defined period of time. In order to do this, go to “My Jobs” and click on “Correct Spot” at the bottom of the particular Spot. You can also always look at the results of your Spot at the top right under “Results”. Your correction will then be checked again.[14]
