Platform Overview
AppJobber is a “place-based microtasking” platform, meaning that clients use the platform to find workers in particular places who are willing to complete place-based tasked for a (usually small) fee. Tasks often include taking photos of things in particular places, for example in-store displays, product prices, or infrastructure such as parking structures.

Platform History
Parent company wer denkt was GmbH (German for “Who Thinks What”) is a spin-off from the Multimedia Communications Lab at the Technical University of Darmstadt. The company also operates several online “citizen participation” platforms as well as “Regalpreis” (literally “Shelf Price”), a service based on AppJobber that allows clients to check in-store prices of goods, usually within 24 hours.

Business Model
The platform charges the client a percentage of the task paid to the worker for each task, on the order of 40 to 50 percent.

Work Process
Clients post and price tasks, including a briefing and any necessary photos or other files, to the platform. Workers use the mobile phone app to find, choose, and complete jobs (i.e., taking and submitting photos). Clients may reject (decline payment for) unsatisfactorily submitted work, but workers may appeal rejections. Workers are not assigned jobs but may open the app at any time and pick jobs that interest them.
